UC Davis West Village transcends community and campus norms beyond “just buildings” into a realm of innovation in sustainability. As the largest zero-net-energy development in the United States, West Village consists of academic facilities, innovative Energy Hubs, and housing for more than 2,000 students, faculty and staff.
The area west of Vic Fazio Highway offers more than 650 apartments, a recreation center, study facilities, outdoor community space, and 42,500 square feet of commercial space for endless opportunities. A central community building features a fitness center, multipurpose room and student support services.
Sacramento City College Davis Center at UC Davis West Village is the first community college center to be located on a University of California campus, thanks to a partnership between UC Davis and the Los Rios Community College District. The college center offers 11 classrooms, a computer lab, art studio, career technology center, administrative offices and counseling space. And it has earned a silver certification for LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, which is a program of the U.S. Green Building Council.
In addition, UC Davis West Village houses the Joe A. Heidrick Western Center for Agricultural Equipment (WCAE), the Western Cooling Efficiency Center, and the UC Davis Center for Design in the Public Interest. The UC Davis Energy and Transportation Center is the first of three planned energy hubs and was established by a group of energy research centers, including:
While UC Davis West Village’s innovators look to the future, the community itself serves an urgent need now — housing. As housing in Davis becomes more difficult for UC Davis students to secure, West Village offers up hundreds of student apartments as respite for transfer students, incoming students, and continuing students who struggle to find student housing.
Sol at West Village is an exciting, eco-friendly housing community with a variety of floor plans, resort-style amenities, and luxurious apartments. Energy-efficient appliances are included in the apartments, along with a 42-inch, flat-screen TV in every living room; full-size washer and dryer; and private bathrooms.
View WebsiteOf course, looking to the future is a natural part of a planned community, which is why additional housing is already underway. The Green at West Village is set to add 1,250 units and will feature recreation fields, a community building, and devoted study areas. And in sticking to environmentally-friendly practices, The Green will also feature a photovoltaic system which will power the facility.
UC Davis West Village offers a unique living experience you can’t find elsewhere. And if you venture a short distance, you’ll find everything else you could possibly need. Excitement, entertainment, exploration and education are around every turn as murals and sculptures adorn the area and art galleries welcome visitors. Three cinema complexes keep crowds on the edges of their seats, while more than ten stages present a plethora of theater and performance art.
UC Davis isn’t the only place in West Village where students can learn. Trivia nights are hosted weekly at nearby eateries, and the area overflows with interesting exhibits at Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, UC Davis Design Museum, The Artery, John Natsoulas Gallery, Bohart Museum of Entomology and Exploreit Science Center.
But if you find the indoors a bit too stuffy, go outside and get ready for some fabulous ways to exercise both body and mind. UC Davis West Village is a bicyclist’s dream, where bike paths and greenbelts weave seamlessly through area parks, and 45% of commuters to the university ride bikes. There’s also the Davis Bike Club, the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, and a fantastic DIY bicycle shop open to the public (Davis Bike Collective). If running is more your style, try to keep up with the Golden Valley Harriers!
The close proximity to the university as well as the city makes UC Davis West Village one of the best places to live. The Davis Farmers Market is nearby with ready-made desserts and meals, live music, and fresh produce from farms in the region. Or take a trip to the California Raptor Center to meet fascinating birds of prey and learn about falcons, eagles, harriers, hawks, owls and more. And don’t forget to stop by Häagen-Dazs Honey Bee Haven, which promotes education and observation of honey bees, as well as provides resources to local bee pollinators.
